Downtown Building Gets New Swashbuckling Resident
Depp Pays $2 Million For Loft In Star-Laden Building

LOS ANGELES -- Johnny Depp, who typically calls France home these days, has bought a penthouse in downtown's landmark Eastern Columbia Building, it was reported Sunday.
The $2 million loft in the turquoise 13-story Art Deco building was bought this past fall, but remains vacant, the Los Angeles Times said.
In 2006, the vintage-1930 Moderne office tower with a distinctive clock tower was converted into 147 residential lofts and, since then, all except six on the penthouse level have sold. Prices run from the high $600,000 range to $2.2 million, Ruth Ryon said in her weekly Hot Property column.
Other entertainment industry buyers have included comedian Ant and Slade Smiley, a heartthrob who was on the TV show "The Real Housewives of Orange County."
Buyers qualify for historic tax credits or reduced property taxes, through the Mills Act, the newspaper said.
An 1,827-square-foot, furnished corner unit on the 12th floor is listed around $1.8 million. It boasts an open floor plan and high ceilings, a bronze- and-iron entry gate, storage for 112 bottles of wine, flat-screen TVs, a jukebox, a vintage-style safe and city views.
