Angus Morrison Elementary School teacher Kerrie Fitzhenry has been led on a treasure hunt to get her cardboard cutout of Pirates of the Caribbean character Jack Sparrow returned to her classroom after it was kidnapped.
An after-school prank for a crew of teachers at Angus Morrison Elementary School has been blown into uncharted waters.
Kerrie Fitzhenry, a Grade 7 and 8 teacher at the Angus school, created and taught a pirate unit to her classes, which highlighted her affection for Johnny Depp and his character, Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. During the Christmas holidays some of her colleagues thought it would be funny to borrow the life-size cutout of Jack Sparrow from her classroom.
About 10 of Fitzhenry’s fellow teachers were involved, though none are assuming complete responsibility.
“It’s been a variety of people that have had their hands on Jack and taken him places. He has been all through the Georgian triangle,” said teacher Andrea Murik.
There are photos to document Sparrow’s travels, which include a trip to Casino Rama, Cora’s, Georgian Downs and a shopping trip. A Facebook account was set up under the name of Jacky Sparrow to follow his travels and taunt Fitzhenry about his whereabouts.
A treasure hunt was created for Fitzhenry to get her beloved cutout back. She was sent to various locations in the school and even in her backyard to collect gold coins in hopes of having Sparrow returned.
She has collected nine of the 10 coins needed, but Sparrow’s adventures have since been set adrift from what was initially anticipated.
One of the teachers is friends with Breakfast Television’s Frank Ferragine, who was asked to bring the cutout to the show to have photos taken with the cast. Sparrow ended up making an on-air appearance and is believed to be on his way to Memphis, Tennessee or Peru.
“We never expected it would get this big,” said teacher John Alexander.
In the beginning, the cutout was intended to be returned around March Break. They think that goal has been pushed back since his television debut, but they would still like to have it returned before the end of the school year.
“He’s got some travelling to do and he’s got to do it fast,” said Alexander.
There have been times when the crew of pranksters considered abandoning ship from the whole thing. All agree that the after-hours antics have boosted school morale.
And Fitzhenry’s students are enjoying their involvement.
Aside from the initial lessons the students had during the unit, the prank has lead to a lesson in world geography. A world map has been posted to highlight the moves of the globetrotting cutout.
“We’re going to plot where he’s going. They get to learn world geography first hand,” said Fitzhenry.
The students and staff each have different desires for where and what they would like Sparrow to do. Ultimately, they all think it would be great if somehow Johnny Depp got involved in bringing the travels of Sparrow cutout to a close.
“I predict that it’s going to see Johnny Depp, he’s going to sign it and we’ll get it back,” said Grade 7 Kaleigh Parsons.
Fitzhenry’s students and friends don’t think the attention will do much to end her adoration for Johnny Depp and Jack Sparrow.
Student Holly Robinson said her teacher’s liking for the actor isn’t just a phase it’s more of a lifestyle.
“The one way to describe her is obsessed,” said Grade 7 student Andrew McEachern.
Since his appearance on Breakfast Television, Jack Sparrow is missing in action. A Facebook group, Jacky Sparrow’s World Adventures, has been created for people to follow his trip. Anyone knowing his whereabouts is invited to post details there.
