CROWN POINT -- Gina Bruno stood in the rain across the street from the old Lake County Jail on Thursday afternoon.
A tear ran down the face of the 14-year-old, clad in a "Pirates of the Caribbean" shirt, who had just traveled 11â„2 hours from Elk Grove Village, Ill., to see her idol Johnny Depp.
Gina, her mom Lynn, her sister Lauren and friend Megan watched as workers removed the last of what just the day before had been the bustling set of the major motion picture "Public Enemies," starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger.
Had Depp been around he would surely have given Gina a handshake or even a hug.
Depp proved his mettle with fans, some of whom spent up to 14 hours at a time during the three-day shoot, waiting to catch a glimpse of the star.
From production semitrailer drivers to his personal driver to the thousands of fans who turned out to see him, Depp, they say, is simply a nice guy who acknowledges them.
Two of the three nights after shooting finished for the day, Depp made his way around a fence separating the set from the public and shook hands with hundreds upon hundreds, stooping often to talk to youngsters, giving them hugs, secret pirate handshakes and signing autographs.
He doesn't have to do it. He simply chooses to, his people said.
Following behind Depp on Tuesday, his driver was address-ed by a mom, who said what a nice guy Depp seemed to be.
"He's that and a whole lot more," said his driver. "He's a wonderful guy. I'll tell you firsthand, he's a great man."
Haley Bunde, 14, of Crown Point, was at the end of the line at Tuesday's meet and greet with Depp.
"I met him at 11, right before he went in his car," Haley said. "He shook my hand, and said, 'Thank you,' and 'God bless.'
"He's really nice," Haley said. "It's really nice for the young kids. He bent down and shook their hands, and he didn't skip a group. He went down the whole line."
Brittany Harris said Depp approached her son, Ethan Hedges, 6, and "parted the people and put his hands on his shoulders and said, 'You are my hero for standing out here,' and gave him a secret pirate handshake.
"He's such a nice guy," she said.
